If you’ve read the Thieves article already here on my blog, then you are already aware of the story of how this powerful essential oil blend received its name…Thieves. Here is the link if you would like to read it:

Here is yet another potent recipe for a Four Thieves Vinegar recipe that also has a similar history as the Thieves essential oil blend. I found this recipe in one of my favorite old herbal medicine books.

Again, this vinegar recipe was used during the bubonic plague era and this specific recipe was used by the “thieves” who were ransacking empty plague ridden homes, stealing valuables. They were caught by the police and were brought to the French judges in Marseilles. The judges wondered how these men “thieves” stayed well and did not fall ill to the plague.

They stated that they would drink and wash with this vinegar preparation every few hours. In return for the recipe, they were granted their freedom.

This potent recipe can be used to wash and cleanse a home with sick individuals and can also be used as just a good anti-bacterial cleanser. You can wash the floors with it, sick rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and as a wall wash.

Externally, this vinegar wash can be used for cleansing and disinfecting skin issues or concerns. You may need to dilute it because of the potency.

Internally, the dosage is 1 teaspoon at a time in water, or 1 TBSP every waking hour as a preventative or immune supporter in a flu epidemic or to take if you have been exposed to someone that is ill. You can also use it in a salad dressing recipe or use it as you would normally use vinegar.

The herbs used in this vinegar recipe are all anti-microbial, antibacterial, and antiviral. Also, Apple cider vinegar helps with digestion, activates friendly bacteria in the GI system, and has potent anti-microbial properties of its own.

Recipe:

Please make sure all of your herbs are certified organic ( all of these herbs can be found at most health food stores, Whole Foods, or spice areas in your grocery stores)

2 cups Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar or a good raw unfiltered organic ACV

1 TBSP dried Sage

1 TBSP dried Rosemary

1 TBSP dried Lavender

1 TBSP dried Juniper berries

2 tsp Black Peppercorns

1 TBSP dried Thyme

1 bulb fresh raw garlic cloves (chopped)

Fill a quart size mason jar with the herbs and garlic and top off with Apple Cider Vinegar (leave 1 inch head space below the top of the jar).

Stir and make sure all the herbs are covered and saturated with the vinegar. Close the jar lid (use a plastic lid if possible or if using metal, cover with parchment paper first and then screw the metal lid on top). The vinegar acids will corrode the metal.

Let this macerate for 4-6 weeks in a dark cupboard. Shake the jar daily to mix all the ingredients, this will also ensure a more potent extraction.

After 4-6 weeks, strain off the solids using a sieve and cheesecloth. Bottle the liquid and compost the herbs. This should keep for at least a year or more in a dark cupboard, or you can use a dark amber colored jar to protect from sunlight and to help to preserve the formula.

*Also, please remember this powerful Super Immune Tonic Recipe below as well! This one is very potent and can be used similarly as the Four Thieves Vinegar. There is also a salad dressing recipe included in the post. :)
