One of my favorite quotes when it comes to food is the very famous quote by Hippocrates, (known as the founder of medicine) which states, “Let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” This quote sums up very well how we can heal our body from eating foods that have abundant healing and medicinal properties.

Another famous and pertinent quote to this topic is from Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” According to the dictionary, this is stating that it is easier to prevent something from happening in the first place than it is to repair the damage after it has occurred.

The foods we eat and foods we choose not to eat can make a huge impact in our healing journey.

In today’s article, you will learn about 6 foods/liquids that have plentiful healing properties and are breast cancer preventatives. Also, I have included many recipes that you can make to incorporate some of these cancer preventative foods into your healing journey.

6 FOODS/JUICES TO ADD INTO YOUR HEALING JOURNEY

1. FLAX SEEDS

Flax seeds are rich in something called lignans. Lignans, a type of phytoestrogen, can support the body in producing less active forms of estrogen. This process has been found to reduce breast cancer risk. Research has shown that adding ground flax into the diet can decrease cancer cell growth in breast tissue. Flax lignans protect against breast cancer by binding up and removing circulating hormones and carcinogens that can promote disease and inflammation. The fiber in the flax seeds bind with these harmful carcinogens and assist in pulling these agents out of the body.

A study published in “Cancer Causes and Control” found that women who ate flax seeds had a 20-30% reduction in breast cancer. Another fascinating study from the University of Toronto performed research on women who were getting ready to have surgery for breast cancer. These women had their tumor and cancer markers measured for 1 month before their surgeries. During this month, the women in the study were given a flax seed muffin that had 5 tsp of ground flax. After 30 days of eating the flax seed muffin, their tumor and cancer markers were measured again and their markers had reduced from 30-71%. This is amazing results and just from eating 1 specific food!

The research that has been done on flax seeds and breast cancer encourages about 2-3 TBSP of ground flax consumption daily.

Here is a healthy flax seed muffin recipe that you can make that gives you almost 3 TBSP of ground flax per muffin:

2. MATCHA GREEN TEA

You have probably heard of the health benefits of green tea over the last several years. Green tea is packed with antioxidants and powerful disease preventing properties. The best and most power packed type of green tea to consume is called Matcha green tea. This type of green tea is from Japan. Two cups of Matcha green tea is equivalent to drinking 10 cups of regular green tea.

In 2003, the University of Colorado published a report about green tea and the potent antioxidant found in this tea, known as EGCG. This report found that Matcha contained almost 137 times more EGCG than regular green tea. Matcha green tea has a higher ORAC score (antioxidant level) than blueberries and pomegranates. Matcha green tea is an antioxidant superstar in the antioxidant world and is chock full of vitamins and minerals too!

Matcha green tea has also been shown to decrease inflammation and suppress aggressive estrogen mediators in breast tissue. This powerhouse tea has been shown to prevent new blood flow to breast cancer tumors and research shows that it also prevents DNA damage that is typically seen in breast cancer.

Drink 2 cups daily for breast health. Here is a good resource:

3. CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES

Cruciferous vegetables known as the brassica family or group has also been shown to be a big contender in breast cancer prevention. The veggies in this group are; arugula, bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli rabe, broccolini, broccoli sprouts, collards, Brussel sprouts, kale, horseradish, kohlrabi, mustard greens, radishes, turnips, turnip greens, and watercress.

This group of veggies is rich in sulphoraphanes, which are sulfur containing compounds and high in indole-3 carbinol. These compounds assist the liver in detoxification of excess estrogens (known as xenoestrogens), and carcinogens. Cruciferous vegetables are anti-inflammatory and detoxifying.

A study performed in China showed that women who regularly ate 1 serving daily of cruciferous veggies had a 50% reduction of breast cancer. Another study showed that the women who consumed the most of these veggies were the least likely to have a breast cancer reoccurrence or to die from the disease.

Here are 4 delicious recipes that you can make to incorporate cruciferous veggies into your lifestyle:

4. GINGER ROOT

In a study performed by Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology in India found that a potent compound found in ginger, known as 6-Shogaol, is 10,000 times more effective at destroying cancer stem cells than conventional chemotherapy.

This study showed how the active component in ginger (6-Shogaol) and a chemotherapy drug known as Taxol affected breast cancer stem cells. The study concluded that Taxol had very little effect on the cancer stem cells but ginger targeted them directly.

Cancer stem cells are the baby cells that develop into mature cancer cells that form into tumors. These cancer stem cells can lie dormant in the body for years before metastasizing to other parts of the body. Getting to the root of why your cancer developed and eliminating these cancer stem cells is the most effective way towards optimal healing.

Studies have shown that the majority of women with breast cancer, who lose the battle of their disease, do not die from the tumor or primary cancer but from the metastasis of the disease (spreading from one part of the body to another).

The studies and research recommends eating about 3 to 3.5 ounces of fresh ginger root daily. Include ginger root into your fresh juices and/or make a delicious ginger tea.

Ginger Tea Recipe:

1 large chunk of grated fresh ginger (size of 2 fingers)

Juice of 1 lemon

1 quart of filtered water

1 TBSP raw honey

Boil the water, add grated ginger root and bring to boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and continue simmering for 10 minutes. Take off heat and let cool slightly. Strain the ginger root from the water and add lemon juice and raw honey.

Drink as a hot tea or refrigerate and enjoy cold. This is a delicious and spicy drink that is great for immune health and rejuvenation.

Ginger has also been shown to be effective in prostate, ovarian, skin, lung, liver, and colorectal cancers as well. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, assists with digestion, and effective in pain reduction.

5. HAELAN 951

Soy is one of those foods that has had many positive and negative reviews when it comes to optimal health. The main thing that we need to remember is that most soy today, up to 87-90%, is considered to be genetically modified (GMO), which means it is altered to be herbicide tolerant, resistant to insect infestation and disease. Genetically modified foods have been altered in the laboratory from their original constitution. Animal studies have linked the consumption of genetically modified foods to many health concerns.

Eating soy that is non-fermented can have adverse health effects to your body, such as digestive disturbances and hormonal imbalances. Non-fermented soy is an anti-nutrient, which means it interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This is why we hear so many negative things about soy in the media and news today. The studies are performed on conventional GMO soy and non-fermented soy.

The consumption of fermented soy is a different story. The research performed in Asian countries where soy in the diet was shown to be helpful is because these countries are naturally consuming traditionally fermented soy, not non-fermented soy.

This brings me to the next powerhouse cancer preventative food, called Haelan 951. Haelan 951 is an organic, non GMO fermented soy drink that has had amazing research in the prevention of cancer. It has also been shown to boost the immune system and to be a very helpful agent for those who are already dealing with cancer. It was developed in the 1980’s by Chinese medical doctors and nutritionists. The purpose was to provide nutritional support and nourishment for patients having difficulty recovering from chemotherapy and medical treatments.

Haelan 951 is a term from Old English that means cure, save, make whole, sound, and well. It is a highly nutritive food that is packed with enzymes, amino acids, vegetable proteins, and micronutrients. It is a predigested food, which means that it is easily digested and absorbed.

One bottle of Haelan 951 contains 25 lbs of non GMO organic fermented soy, being very rich in isoflavones and genistein. Isoflavones act as phytoestrogens or plant estrogens in the body. These plant estrogens have weak estrogenic effects, which act to protect the body from more aggressive cancer causing estrogens.

Genistein has  been shown to induce breast cancer cell death. Another amazing benefit is that it inhibits breast cancer stem cells, which are the baby cancer cells responsible for metastases.  It has also been shown to stop the spread of blood vessels that feed tumors.

6. JUICING

Juicing is the process of extracting the juice from fresh vegetables and fruits (preferably vegetables), and leaving the pulp behind. Juicing is different than blending, as you would make a smoothie in a blender. The blending process combines the juice and the fiber pulp of the produce. Blended smoothies can be a healthy and nourishing food too, but it is not digested and absorbed as easily as fresh pressed juices. The process of juicing removes the fiber from the plants making it a very nutrient dense food. Removing the fiber also makes it a very easy to digest food, especially to a compromised digestive system. The fresh juice goes directly into the bloodstream and is absorbed within 20-30 minutes. I always tell my clients that juicing is like IV nutrient therapy. It is like a transfusion of powerful nutrition deposited directly into your bloodstream.

Fresh juices break down diseased tissues in the body and clean out old debris from cells and tissues that are lacking oxygen and vitality. It then restores new cells to a vibrant and oxygen rich state. Fresh juice also assists in proper drainage of the cleansing organs, including the liver, colon, and kidneys. It also helps in cleansing the bloodstream, lymph, and skin.

Since returning from the Gerson clinic I have made juicing a daily part of my own life. My juicer sits on our kitchen counter and stays there. It has become a daily morning ritual for me because I have seen the many healing benefits for myself and for others. It is very energizing and gives you beautiful glowing skin. You can feel the vitality and liveliness in your body after you drink a fresh glass.

Juicing is not only amazingly beneficial for individuals with health concerns but it’s also a wonderful way to sustain health and wellness. It is a fantastic way to get many servings of fresh produce into your system daily. Five servings of fruits and vegetables is the recommended minimum amount per day. Some days, it can be challenging to get that amount in our diets, so juicing is a great way to remedy this situation. Typically, you get about 3-5 servings of produce or more, in one 8oz glass of juice.
